Guiding Families Through the Journey of Recovery

Family Care & Support

Al-Anon’s 3 Cs—”You didn’t Cause it, you can’t Control it and you can’t Cure it”

Cause

Understanding Family Care

At LIV Recovery Center, we recognize that addiction is a complex condition influenced by genetic, environmental, and psychological factors—you are not the cause of someone else’s addiction. No matter how much you wish you could have prevented it, the reality is that you are not responsible for another person’s choices or behaviors. Our Family Care Program is designed to help loved ones release guilt, understand the nature of addiction, and focus on their own healing. Through compassionate, person-centered therapy, we empower families to set healthy boundaries, improve communication, and foster stronger, more supportive relationships. By letting go of self-blame, families can shift their energy toward healing and growth, creating a healthier path forward for everyone involved.

Control

Understanding Your Role

Addiction is a disease, and no matter how much we want to, we cannot force someone to stop using if they are not ready. Instead of trying to control their choices, focus on what you can control—educating yourself about addiction, setting healthy boundaries, and prioritizing self-care. At LIV Recovery Center, our Family Care Program provides support through family sessions and Loved Ones Day, creating opportunities for open discussions, breaking unhealthy patterns, and addressing intergenerational trauma. While your loved one is in treatment, family sessions—held with or without the client—offer guidance in navigating addiction’s complexities and fostering accountability. To stay informed about a loved one’s progress, they must sign a Release of Information (ROI), as all communication is client-directed and managed through case managers. Seeking support through groups like Al-Anon or working with a recovery coach can also help families find balance, ensuring they offer empathy without enabling harmful behaviors. While encouraging professional help is valuable, true recovery is a personal choice—by shifting your focus to your own well-being, you can provide support while protecting your own peace.

  • Nar-Anon – Support groups for those affected by a loved one’s drug addiction.

Cure

Understanding Next Steps

Addiction is a chronic condition that only the person struggling can choose to overcome, no matter how much their loved ones want to help. Watching cycles of relapse and recovery can be difficult, but accepting that you cannot fix their addiction allows you to release the burden of responsibility. Instead of trying to rescue them, you can offer support while setting healthy boundaries, as emphasized in programs like Al-Anon. Embracing empathy and acceptance helps you provide unconditional love while understanding that recovery is ultimately their choice.
