Drug Abuse vs. Drug Addiction

While both drug abuse and drug addiction involve the misuse of substances, they are not the same. Drug abuse, also referred to as substance abuse, is characterized by the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances. It often involves using drugs in a manner or in quantities that are dangerous or harmful to the individual or others.
On the other hand, drug addiction, also known as substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to an inability to control the use of legal or illegal drugs or medication.

Drug addiction is characterized by intense drug cravings and compulsive drug use despite debilitating consequences. While initial drug use may be voluntary, repeated use can lead to brain changes that interfere with an individual’s self-control and ability to resist cravings, making sobriety a struggle.

While drug abuse can often lead to drug addiction, they are distinct in terms of the degree of compulsion to use the drug and the impact of drug use on the person’s daily life.

The most commonly abused drugs fall into a handful of categories:
  • Prescription drugs: These include opioids, sedatives, and stimulants. Opioids, such as oxycodone and morphine, are commonly prescribed for pain relief, but their euphoric effects make them prone to misuse. Sedatives and tranquilizers, including drugs like Xanax and Valium, are used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders but can be highly addictive. Stimulants, such as Adderall and Ritalin, are often prescribed for conditions like ADHD but can be misused for their energy-boosting effects.
  • Illicit drugs: These range from marijuana as the most widely used illicit drug, followed by cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines, which carry high risks of addiction and severe health consequences.
